Yesterday evening I fell down the stairs, further messing up my back and etc. And boy did it hurt like a *&^%#% $^%$@! Anyway, I stayed home, self medicated, kept moving so that I didn't stiffen up, and got some sleep. Went in to work today because we had a mandatory training, and nearly everyone there asked me why I was even there, why I wasn't at home, the dr's office, ed, whatever. Finally called my MD's office, who sent me straight to the ED, where I spent the better portion of my day. Here begins my
The ED at CMC is either the most unprofessional, inefficient emergency department I've ever been in, or I had the benefit of having all of the mental midgets treating me today. Apparently because know my body (and this particular injury) well enough to know that I'd actually hurt more if I stayed in one position, that means I need no pain management. Never mind that I rated my pain at a 8 of 10 and said that I was unable to decrease my pain in any way (keeping it from increasing, was the only thing I could manage). Oh yeah, and that bit about having no pain relief from either the vicodin or the 800mg of ibuprofen apparently didn't mean anything either because I didn't even get offered something for pain until 2 and a half hours after I got there once I finally broke into tears. Hell, if I had known that I had to cry to get drugs, I would have done that sooner. Then there was the nurse practitioner who was repeatedly introduced as a physician's assistant and had to be the most unprofessional health care "professional" I have ever met in my life. The advice I overheard him give to a nearby patient for a muscle spasm was outright wrong, and essentially took the route of "Well, we'll medicate you until you don't know you have any pain and not do anything about the actual source of the pain and send you off to home." AND he pretty much said "oh yeah, just take it easy for the next few days, sit back have a beer, relax, you'll be fine."
So in the end, wonder nurse was going to send me home with a diagnosis of "low back pain" and an basic discharge instructions sheet until I asked what had the results of my lab work and x-rays were, at which point I was informed that the tests indicated that I had bruised both kidneys. But in his esteemed medical opinion, it likely meant nothing and while I could follow up with my physician about it, but it would only result in my having to have further uncomfortable testing that probably wouldn't lead to anything anyway. A$$hole.
